This morning I remembered a phrase that was ground into my mind as a young man on Parris Island going through Marine Recruit training.

“Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body!”.

In that training process, we endured physical challenges that sometimes drove us to the brink, or beyond what we thought we were physically capable of doing. Our drill instructors would push us and push us further and further until they could see that we were just about to give up. Once we reached this critical point, when we were all just about to quit, they would prompt us to scream out as loud as we could

“Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body!”.

So what did this accomplish? Two things. One physical and one mental.

#1 – By screaming out as loud as we could, it forced us to breathe. When you are under a demanding physical stress you often “Forget” to breathe properly, thereby depriving your muscles of much needed oxygen and lose strength. By restoring breathing, your restore the flow of oxygen to your muscles and get a “Second wind”.

#2 – It tricked our minds. It shifted the focus from the pain we were experiencing right at that moment to the end result. By shouting that phrase, we were forced to think about how we would be stronger and better for having endured. That phrase represented the reward for our pain.

How does that have anything to do with network marketing and education?

I’ll explain! This morning’s conversation was in regard to some training resources and educational material that we have. My friend asked me if I had read a particular book. In the last few months I’ve read a lot of books, and I could not remember. “I’ve done a lot of reading in the last few months,” I told him. He replied “Kind of makes the brain sore!”

This immediately brought me back to “Pain is weakness leaving the body”. Only with a slightly different, but no less significant, spin. The new phrase is “Expansion of Knowledge is LACK leaving the mind!”.

You see, in order for us to learn how to become successful in anything, we require specialized knowledge. Just as a U.S. Marine requires knowledge in the form of munitions, physical ability and combat tactics, as business men and women in network marketing, we require knowledge about how residual income works, how compensation plans work, what to look for in policies and procedures, how to talk to prospects, how to sell without selling, why some companies fail while others succeed, etc.

Learning all of this can make your brain hurt a little!

When that starts to happen, shout out to yourself…..

“Expansion of Knowledge is lack leaving the mind!”

With a lack mentality, you will do nothing but find excuses about why prospects don’t want to talk to you, why no compensation plan is right for you, how all policies and procedures are stacked against you and why you could never “sell” products.

But through education and perseverance, just as I was able to hike 20 plus miles with a pack that was half my body weight, you can overcome all of those fears and leave your lack mentality behind. But there is a catch! What is it?

YOU HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT!

Just as I made a choice nearly 15 years ago that I wanted to be a United States Marine, I made a choice to become a professional network marketer. Through education and teamwork, I’ve been able to accomplish that goal. My brotherhood, my platoon if you will, is Mentoring for Free. Through this mastermind group I’m able to continually expand my knowledge base beyond what I previously thought was possible to be a better Mentor to all who are looking to put that “Lack” mentality behind them.

There are a lot of people out there that will tell you that “MLM is a sales business”.  I have to say that I completely disagree with that statement. The following is the way that Tom “Big Al” Schreiter explains how to “Not sell” using his One Minute Presentation. It’s true that in order to make money you have to move product. We all know that. If you don’t have product moving through your organization then you’re probably not making any money! The real key is how your product is being moved. Obviously you want to have a consumable, value priced product that people want and need. So for the sake of this article let’s assume that’s the case. Now, I want you to ask yourself two very simple questions, and really think before you answer them!

#1 – Do you like being “Closed” in a high pressure sales situation?

#2 – What do you think or do at a store when you see the sales person headed your way?

Most of you probably answered “No” to question number one pretty quickly. If you answered yes, you’re less than 1% of the population…..but read on anyway! This is going to help you understand how the rest of the planet thinks. On question number 2, the vast majority of us probably answered somewhere in the middle. If you have questions about a product, then you may want to talk to the salesperson. But, for the most part, most of us have a pretty good idea about what we are looking for BEFORE we go looking for it. So your not all that interested in talking to the sales person, and are probably looking for a way to dodge them when we see them coming.

Having gone through that little exercise, why would you try to “sell” your product or service to anyone? Especially if it’s unsolicited! You’re a turn off before you even start, and not likely to get them to buy. (Unless your RED! – See “Introduction to Colors”)

So we have a problem! How do we get people to buy our product or service without selling it to them?

It’s not as difficult as you might think!

Here’s the solution. Find the people that have a problem that your product or service can solve, then find out if they WANT to solve their problem (This is important!) and help people solve their problem. This can be applied to just about anything, from your products, to your business opportunity. Let’s use an example here.

Let’s say that I’m having a conversation with just some random person, doesn’t matter where because this is very non-invasive and could work anywhere. Tom keeps it pretty generic, so I will to. Insert products as you see fit!

Me – Hi how are you today?

Prospect – Oh, I’m alright. Just out getting some “XX” for the house.

Me – Yeah I had to go out and get some of that the other day myself.

Prospect – Yeah, this stuff never seems to last long enough, and it’s getting hard to pay for it as often as we need it! (He/She has just identified that they have a money problem for you. Now you can find out if they would like to solve their problem!)

Me – I used to have that problem to. I found a pretty simple way to solve it though. I have a little story I could tell you, takes about a minute. It might help you make some extra money to cover your expenses, it might not. Would you like to hear it?  (Now I’ve offered to tell them about a solution to their problem, and told them that it will only take up 1 minute of their time. Plus, almost everyone likes a story!)

Prospect – Sure!

Me – I’m a Firefighter, and I found that it was getting difficult for me to keep up with my bills and expenses to. Then I got talking to a guy/gal I know and they showed me how I could make enough money to cover my expenses by finding some people who are interested in (Insert Product). Now I just talk to people interested in (Insert Product) and when they buy some, I get paid for it.

Now, I’ll break from the conversation here. At this point, the prospect is either going to be interested, and you’ll either give them some more information or set up a time to meet with them, or they are not, and you LEAVE THEM ALONE! Finish your conversation and go on your way.

You have now told them about your product, and your business opportunity, and given them a chance to take an interest. If they don’t take an interest, don’t try to convince them. Your wasting your time! You will have to convince them month after month, and all you’ve done is created a job for yourself.

The above conversation could be tailored to fit just about any product, service or business opportunity out there. We all know that it takes many different types of people to make the world go ’round. We also all know that just about everyone on the planet is different. That’s pretty basic!

So why is it that so many people take the exact same approach when talking about thier business, service or product with every single person they talk to?

The answer is really pretty simple. That’s just the way that we’re trained. Most of the training systems out there don’t take personality into account. They just tell you to say “X,Y and Z” off of some script and hope for the best! I’m here to tell you……THAT’S INSANE!

So what can we do differently to change it? How can we tailor our presentations so that the person we are talking to will be more responsive to what we have to say? How can we get out of that scripted “Rut” and get people to actually listen to what we have to say?

The answer to those questions is actually pretty simple to.

Step 1 – Stop Talking.

Step 2 – Listen and pay attention.  REALLY Listen and pay attention!

When you do those two things your going to have an opportunity to figure something out that can change not only the way you talk to your prospect when the time comes, but a chance to double or even triple the positive response from them! Within just a few minutes, by paying attention to what they say and how they say it, you can determine what type of personality type your prospect is.

People can be easily categorized into four basic types of personalities. By determining this you’ll be able to talk to them in THEIR language, and they will LISTEN to YOU and what you have to say.  I’ll give a short description of each here……

  • Blue (Sanguine) – Blue personalities are  high speed, low drag. They want to have fun and will freely offer information that you don’t need, and may not even have any relevance to what your talking about. They just want to have fun! They don’t care about the details for the most part, that stuff is BORING to them. They just want to GO, GO, GO!
  • Yellow (Phlegmatic) – Yellow personalities are caring and loving. They are generally emotionally sensitive. They have a soft and gentle nature and care more about taking care of others than themselves. They will generally answer your questions, but don’t offer any additional information as a rule. They want to know how what you’re talking about can help people.
  • Green (Melancholy) – Green Personalities like to take it slow and get all the facts. Their emotions are none of your business, as it’s not relevant to anything in business. They are generally polite, but don’t offer information freely and may or may not answer your questions completely. Give them all the information you can, they soak it up! Just make sure you give them time to make notes and analyze it!
  • Red (Caloric) – Red personalities know better than you. You don’t have to ask them, they will tell you they know better than you and then they’ll tell you why. If you get to ask them any questions they will likely ignore it and just finish telling you how great they are. These people are GREAT at hard sales, and they can put TONS of people into a business, but they won’t coach or train any of them. They will be way too busy talking themselves up to someone else.

By learning these four personality types, and how to speak to each one, you can customize you approach to whatever it is you’re trying to do whether it’s selling a product, introducing a business or pretty much anything else! By doing this, you can create a relationship with someone almost instantly!

Knowing how to recognize these and deal with each one can also help you greatly in improving your personal relationships as well. You can get a better understanding of why your Brother, Spouse, Parents, Kids, Aunts and Uncles do things the way they do! ( Imagine actually understanding your Spouse?! )

I first wrote this story down to share it with some good friends of mine. It is a  short depiction of my first experience with network marketing. I hope that you’ll get a good laugh out of it and maybe pull a nugget or two from it! So off we go….

Back in 1994 at age 18, I was on top of the world.

Just out of high school, I had a good job as a draftsman and department manager, and a part time job as a cell attendant at the local Police Station.

Monkey DrumsA buddy of mine in our basement band invited me one day to hear about some kind of business.

This guy gave one heck of a presentation! He drew excited frantic circles on his white board set up in a tiny little living room and was practically dancing as he spoke! We named him Jumpin’ George.

He told us all about the power of networking and leveraging our time, and how by just getting people to buy all the same things they normally buy at the store from our businesses, we could all retire before we turned 20 if we worked at it.

I was hooked!

From the first circle, I could see where this was going, and boy, this could be HUGE! I had absolutely NO prior exposure to the concept of leverage, and absolutely no clue that network marketing had been around for more than a few months!

I signed up with this company three days later when Jumpin’ George came to my parents house to follow up with me.

I got to know George and his wife very well over the next couple of months.

I phoned them daily, visited their home weekly to pick up product and tapes and the book of the month, bought everything they told me I needed to buy, listened to every motivational tape ever made, and traveled to every seminar within 100 miles.

I’ve always looked very young for my age. I could have gotten into the local water park at the discounted kid rate if I had tried!

Despite my young looks, I became a prospecting MACHINE!

I would put on my “Power Suit” complete with red tie and wing tip shoes shined to the nines, and imagined I looked like Michael Douglas delivering his “Greed is Good” speech!

Then I would hop into my 1980 Chevy Citation looking like a 12 year old dressed up for Sunday School and head off to harrass the masses!

My favorite was the mall.

I would start out just randomly walking up to strangers and pitching them right out of the gate. “Hi there!” I would start with a big smile on my face. “Do you have a minute?”

If they didn’t run away at that point, they would wish they had after the next thirty seconds. I bashed on …

“How would you like to learn about a revolutionary new way to create massive wealth without changing any of your current spending habits and retire from whatever it is you’re doing now without having to worry about your financial situation for the rest of you life and provide all the things for your family that you never thought possible within just a few short years?”

I could get that all out in one breath! If I said it really fast without pausing, they couldn’t interrupt me!

Most of them were polite enough to take my card. Some of them even waited until I was out of sight before they threw it away.

When shoppers began avoiding me, I moved on to the poor store clerks – a captive audience. I always asked them a shopping question before I socked it to them so they wouldn’t call security right away. Somehow that trick worked for a long time!

And pity the poor saps that allowed me into their homes for a business presentation!

Chimp Kid CarI’d pull up in their driveways in the Citation that cost me $110 from the local classifieds – rust holes all over, huge crack down the windshield, and lumpy caulking on the roof to seal the leaky sunroof. They’d hear me coming because of the breaks in my exhaust system, and when they looked out to investigate the noise, they’d see me sliding over to the passenger side to get out because the driver’s side door wouldn’t open from the inside and the window wouldn’t roll down.

One day I visited a beautiful new home on the other side of town with a brand new truck and car in the driveway. The large yard was fenced for the inground pool, and their fishing boat was roomier than my apartment.

When the noise died and the smoke cleared, they watched from the window as I emerged from the passenger side in my power suit and red tie, opened the hatchback for my easel and followup packages, and headed inside to tell these people how to make some REAL money!

Their teenage son, who looked older than me, ushered me in to the living room where I proceeded to draw circles like Columbus describing the world to Ferdinand and Isabella. I was sweating feverishly by the end of my presentation and all smiles. I KNEW I had these people in the bag! I was Jumpin’ Justin!

After about half an hour of trying to get them to take my overnight packs, they were kind enough to let the door close ALMOST all the way before bursting into laughter.

There’s a lot more I could write about those days. There were some things about that time that I really enjoyed, like the personal development. The business side of things, however, lacked something CRITICAL that I never understood until recently.

Even though we DID build personal relationships in that business, it all
came back to a bottom line. If you weren’t getting meetings, moving product, bringing numbers in, i.e. ‘producing’, no one had time for you.

The only advice I ever heard was to go get a bunch of no’s and bring the upline a yes. If you couldn’t take that beating, you weren’t worthy of their time.

Even if you WERE bringing people to the table, if they weren’t buying
product, YOU were doing something wrong. “Go get them and close them!”

What a load of crap!

Today, I’m using a system that’s so superior to that way of doing things
that I could literally write a book about it! Fortunately for all of us, though,
someone else already has!

And that someone is Michael Dlouhy, and that book is Success in Ten Steps.

Today, I don’t have to go out and harrass anyone.
